Promoting Great Blogs: It’s Gone Viral, What’s Next?

by Chuck Westbrook on October 28, 2008

Less than a week ago, I shared a simple idea for how to help discover and promote under-appreciated blogs. As I write this, there are over 250 bloggers represented in the comments section of that post, people who have signed up to participate. While I had visions of it reaching hundreds of bloggers, I had no idea it would happen within a couple of days. I’m excited about that, and I hope you are as well.

Thanks For the Tremendous Support

When Chris Brogan mentioned my post on his Twitter feed, it was off to the races, and then, when Darren Rowse did the same thing a couple of days later, another surge came in.

But while those two giants helped spark things off, it was the rest of you that picked up the torch and ran with it. Through blogs, tweets, emails, Diggs, StumbleUpon, and message boards, you helped spread the word, and I want to say thank you for that enthusiasm and willingness to share. I said it’s what this would need, and it’s exactly what you gave me.

Picking a Blog

It’s going to be a lot of fun to pick the first blog. As I promised, the first one will be chosen from the blogs with a link back to my original post and with evidence of the link (in a comment or trackback) in response to that same post.

I’ll be announcing that first lucky blog on Monday of next week, and I want to give the author of that blog advanced notice on Friday to make sure they prepare their “A” game for their many guests.

That means that if you want your blog to be considered, make sure you get the link on your site and let me know in the track-backs or comments of that post by Thursday.

I’ll Be Very Accessible this Week

While I want to keep all of the new “I want in!” comments on the original post to help keep things organized, the comments on this post will be a great place to share your thoughts and ask your questions about the project.

As for me personally, I’ve enjoyed looking at all 260 of your blogs. I’ve exchanged emails with many of you, and I’ve connected with many more through Twitter. While my primary motivation for doing this project is my belief in the idea itself, a major reason I blog is to connect with interesting people.

I expect forming connections to be foundational to the culture of our group, and to that end, I would be more than happy to connect with each of you.

The best way to strike up a conversation with me is to follow me on Twitter and chat with me there. In fact, I’m a recent convert to Twitter, so if you are unsure of what it is, I’d be happy to share why I’m enjoying it.

Additional News this Week

This project is an exciting one, and I want to tell you everything about how it is going to work going forward, but that would be far too much to cover in a single post. So this week, I’ll begin breaking it up into multiple posts, addressing many of the questions you’ve been asking and sharing more of the plan for those who are interested.

Thanks again to all of you–more to come later this week.
