Good Words Needed for Badges, Best Ideas Win

by Chuck Westbrook on December 11, 2008

I consider myself pretty creative when it comes to using words, but I’m having a hard time coming up with a great message for a banner for participants of our group members to put on the side of their blogs. I need your collective creative genius to help me out.

What are Badges?

To get an idea of what I have in mind, look at these. Those are badges, and we do need them.

These will be given to anyone who wants one to put on their blog. It will help grow the project, help drive traffic to the featured blog, and mark you as someone who believes in giving others a helping hand.

What the Badges Will Be Like

This is mostly just FYI. I’ve got a couple of people helping me with design. If you want to help with that effort, drop me an email to that effect. Otherwise, these points should help give you an idea of your canvas.

  • The badges are going to be pretty small (125 x 125) to encourage people to actually use it.
  • The badges will need to link to both the project home page AND the current featured blog. I would prefer the name or URL of the current blog to be included, to fit nicely.
  • It needs to be something a blog owner would be proud to display.
  • And it also needs to be something a reader of the blog would find interesting enough to click on.

I Need a Clever, Concise Message

Here are some too-wordy possibilities for what to communicate. The goal would be to say something like this but to say it much much more succinctly:

  • I’m a member of this great effort to find and promote great but undiscovered blogs like this one linked below.
  • I’m reading this cool blog and you should too.
  • This is a cool project you should check out. Here’s the current blog we’re all reading.
  • Check out this awesome thing! Click on it to learn more.
  • Go read this blog. It’s being featured on this cool project

…And so on.

The goal is to get people (1) exposed to our project, (2) clicking back to the project homepage, and (3) clicking through to the current featured blog.

Don’t Worry About…

…Naming the project. Already taken care of and we’ll reveal it at the launch of the new site (someday). We’ll fit the name on later, but this is about a message, not a name.

If Your Idea is Selected, Your Wildest Dreams Will Come True

I’ll thank you copiously. I’ll link to your blog on this site several times both before and after the banners drive the project’s traffic up. I’ll put you in the permanent hall of people to thank. I’ll teach you to have better wildest dreams.

Email or Comment or Tweet

My email is in the sidebar on the right of the site. You can comment below, and I’m on Twitter too. Hit me with your best shot.

Thanks for all the help. I look forward to hearing your ideas!
